Flotation Process of Different Copper Ores

2025-02-17 14:24:38   XinHai   (65)

Copper is one of the most widely used metals in the world. It is widely used in fields such as electrical and industrial machinery. The extraction of copper is a complex process involving multiple stages from mining to refining. Among them, the flotation process plays an important role in the extraction of copper metal from copper ore. Flotation is widely used in the treatment of various ores. It mainly relies on the difference in the properties of the mineral surface to selectively recover valuable copper-containing minerals while removing gangue minerals. This article will introduce the flotation process of different copper ores to help you understand the flotation process of copper ores.

Porphyry copper ore flotation process

1. Characteristics

Porphyry copper ores are the main source of copper. These deposits are usually large low-grade ore bodies. The ores contain dispersed chalcopyrite, sphalerite and molybdenum ore, which are embedded in the quartz-feldspar matrix. Because these deposits are low-grade, flotation technology can effectively separate copper ores and other gangue minerals.

2. Porphyry copper ore flotation process

Porphyry copper ore is mined in open pit or underground, and then undergoes primary and secondary crushing to reduce the ore particle size for further processing. The crushed ore enters the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mill for grinding to separate the valuable copper minerals from the gangue minerals to achieve the particle size required for flotation. The flotation process of porphyry copper ore usually includes roughing, concentrating and re-grinding stages. Through these processes, the recovery rate of copper ore and the removal rate of impurities can be improved.

3. Reagents in porphyry copper ore flotation

Copper ore uses a variety of reagents in the flotation process. Porphyry copper ore uses collectors (such as xanthate), foaming agents (such as methyl isobutyl carbitol), inhibitors (such as sodium cyanide), - regulators (such as lime) and other agents in the flotation process. Reasonable flotation reagents can improve flotation efficiency and help improve production efficiency.

Modern flotation plants use advanced process control and automation technologies, such as real-time sensors and machine learning algorithms, to optimize flotation performance and maximize recovery.

Flotation process of copper oxide ore

The mineralogy of copper oxide ore is relatively complex, and it is difficult to obtain an ideal recovery rate using conventional flotation processes, so direct flotation is used to improve the recovery rate of copper oxide. There are four direct flotation methods for copper oxide: fatty acid flotation, amine flotation, chelating agent-neutral oil flotation, and emulsion flotation.

Fatty acid flotation uses fatty acids and their salts as collectors for flotation of oxidized minerals. Amine flotation uses amine compounds as cationic collectors for the flotation of certain copper oxide minerals. Chelating agents help to selectively recover oxidized minerals, while emulsion flotation can improve the recovery rate of copper oxide ore.

When flotating copper oxide ore, problems such as high reagent consumption, poor selectivity, and low recovery rate will be faced. Therefore, a suitable flotation method is selected to solve these problems and improve resource utilization.

Flotation process of copper sulfide ore

Sulfide copper ore usually contains minerals such as chalcopyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and azurite. These minerals have good flotation properties, making flotation an effective method of concentration. During flotation, xanthate, dithiophosphate collectors, pine oil, MIBC and other frothers, sodium cyanide, sodium sulfide and other inhibitors, and copper sulfate and other activators can be used. Choosing a suitable reagent system will help improve the flotation efficiency of copper sulfide ores. The process of copper sulfide ore flotation includes: primary grinding, roughing flotation, fine flotation, and regrinding to further improve the degree of mineral dissociation.

Mixed copper ore flotation process

Mixed copper ore contains two types of minerals, oxide ore and sulfide ore. The coexistence of these two types of ores makes the selection of reagents and the design of flotation processes more complicated. Mixed ore flotation strategies include sequential flotation (floating sulfide ore first, then flotating oxide ore), combined flotation (floating sulfide ore and oxide ore at the same time, and then separating them in sequence), and sulfidation treatment technology (sulfiding oxide ore). Select the appropriate flotation method according to the properties of the ore and the actual situation of the concentrator to efficiently treat mixed copper ore.

Copper ore leaching-precipitation-flotation (LPF) process

The LPF process is a hybrid method suitable for difficult-to-treat ores containing leachable and floatable copper minerals. It combines leaching, precipitation and flotation. This process technology is suitable for ores with high oxidation characteristics, can recover copper from difficult-to-treat minerals, and also has the advantage of reducing reagent consumption.
